What I Did: Applying for ILR for My Family in February 2026 (Before the New Rules)

Applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK can feel overwhelming. I recently completed the process for myself and my family in 2026 before the upcoming rule changes. This post documents exactly what I did, step by step, based on my personal experience.

Step 1: Confirm Eligibility

The first step was making sure we were eligible to apply.

For most work visa routes (like Skilled Worker), the common requirements include:

  • 5 years continuous residence in the UK
  • No excessive absences from the UK
  • Passing the Life in the UK Test
  • Meeting the English language requirement (usually already met via visa route)
  • Valid BRP and visa status

Step 2: Pass the Life in the UK Test

Before submitting the application, the Life in the UK Test must be completed.

Things I did:

Tip: Keep the pass notification safe because you will upload it during the application.

Step 3: Prepare Documents

Typical documents included:

Identity Documents

  • Current passport
  • Previous passports (if available)
  • BRP card

Residence Proof

  • Payslips (last 3–6 months)
  • Bank statements
  • Employment letter

Dependants

For spouse and children:

  • Marriage certificate
  • Birth certificates
  • Passports
  • BRP cards

Additional Documents

  • Life in the UK test pass notification
  • English language proof (if required)
  • Travel history

Step 4: Employer Letter

For Skilled Worker applicants, a letter from the employer confirming employment may be required.

Step 5: Complete the Online ILR Application

Each family member requires a separate application, even if applying together.

The application form includes:

  • Employment details
  • Dependants

Tip: Keep your travel dates ready before starting the form.

Step 6: Pay Application Fees

Fees (as of 2026) are around £2885 per person.

Payments are made during the application process.

Optional services:

  • Priority service an extra 500£ per person
  • Super priority service an extra 1000£ per person

Step 7: Book Biometrics Appointment

After submitting the application, the system redirects to:

UKVCAS appointment booking.

You will:

  • Upload documents
  • Book a biometric appointment
  • Provide fingerprints and photograph

Step 8: Upload Documents

Documents were uploaded online before the appointment.

Typical uploads included:

  • Passport
  • BRP
  • Payslips
  • Employer letter
  • Bank statements
  • Life in the UK test pass
  • Marriage certificate
  • Birth certificates (for children)

Organising files clearly helps the caseworker.

Step 9: Attend Biometrics Appointment

At the appointment:

  • Passport checked
  • Fingerprints taken
  • Photo captured

This usually takes 10–15 minutes.

Step 10: Wait for Decision

After biometrics, the waiting period begins.

Typical timelines:

Standard: up to 6 months
Priority: a few weeks
Super priority: next working day

Once approved, the ILR status is updated digitally.

Here is the checklist I used.

Applicant

  • Passport – Old and New ( All pages scanned)
  • BRP card
  • Life in the UK test pass proof
  • Payslips (3–6 months)
  • Bank statements (3-6 months)- payslip and income in statement should match
  • Employer letter
  • Travel history
  • Cover letter – couple of sample below

  • Cohabiting proof for couple of years where application and dependent name should be on the proof like council tax, utility bills , rental agreement, mortgage statements. (I personally submitted council tax and utility bills for each year)

Children

  • Passport- old and new (All pages scanned)
  • BRP
  • Birth certificate
  • Parent relationship proof

Other Things to Consider

1. Travel History

Ensure no absences exceed the permitted limits.

2. Visa Expiry Timing

Apply before the visa expires but within the eligibility window.

3. Document Naming

Upload files with clear names like:

4. Children Born in the UK

If children are born in the UK but not British yet, they may be eligible to register as British citizens after parents obtain ILR.

Final Thoughts
